Fruit of the Loom, 2020 (fruit and vegetables, plaster, abandoned church)
Fruit of the Loom is a month-long performance art piece that examines decay and the fleeting nature of life. In this project, various fruits and vegetables were encased in plaster and hung from the ceiling, creating a striking visual display. This attempt to preserve perishables was ultimately futile, as time would take its toll. Upon returning a month later, I was surprised to find thousands of fruit flies swarming around the installation. Their presence highlighted the inevitability of decay, turning the artwork into a living reminder of nature's cycle.
As I cut the fruits and vegetables free from their plaster shells, the hardened material shattered, and the rotten produce erupted upon impact. This chaotic moment illustrated how attempts to preserve the perishable lead to disintegration. "Fruit of the Loom" became a powerful exploration of beauty, impermanence, and the relentless march of time.
