Archeological Dig, 2023 (found objects)
During my summer residency at Starworks, I embarked on an exploration of the studio’s depths and unearthed an intriguing treasure: a trash bin brimming with both fired and unfired ceramics. This discovery sparked a crucial realization about the importance of responsibly disposing of materials in a creative and sustainable manner.
The find reminded me of archaeological digs, prompting me to reference photos of an excavation of a Dutch canal, where over 700,000 objects were found. What captivated me was how each object was captured on an equal plane of existence, with every penny documented alongside vases, whether broken or intact. This inspiration influenced the way I chose to display these objects. I adopted a more artistic approach to categorizing the pieces, using color blocking while also attempting to match broken shards with the original vessels. The display itself represents the lack of systems in place for the proper disposal of materials.
Instead of simply discarding these ceramic remnants, I decided to transform them into something new and meaningful. I began by smashing each piece, breaking them down into colorful shards that tell their own stories. These fragments then found a second life as mosaics, artistically integrated into my project, Reclaimed Spheres.
